We Can't Leave Our Seniors Behind...

The first thought most people have when you mention tech education usually will be classes for kids or young adults.  Often time adults aren't at the forefront of the conversation, and most of the time, the senior population (55+) is not even given a thought.  The problem with that is the population of senior adults is vast.  In fact, according to The Population Reference Bureau, 33 countries in Europe and Asia already have more people over 65 than under 15.  So why would it make sense to leave these people behind?  When speaking to folks in this age range, you'll most likely find they are very interested in learning more about technology, they feel ill equipped to keep up on their own, and they are willing to learn if they are given the chance.  We have discussions about slimming down the gender gap in tech jobs, making sure kids are ready for the future by adding computer science in schools, encouraging adults to change careers and jump into tech careers, but we rarely hear about helping our our senior population.

Well, at Nerd Orchard, we see this is a problem and we are now offering classes to the senior population.  We will start small and very basic with classes like, "Smart Phone Exploration" or "Intro to Facebook," but eventually we may branch out and even start teaching our senior friends basic coding concepts and more.  The goal is to help make the senior population more comfortable and to equip them with the knowledge and comfort to learn some of these skills on their own.  Everyone's heard the quote, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day.  Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."  This couldn't be more appropriate.  If you would like to teach some basic courses in your neighborhood for your senior population, contact us and we will help you get started.  Help our Orchard grow for the young and the old!
